What is Dokra?

Dokra is not new to the people of Jharkhand, who are well aware that the Malar clans through their artistic passion carve out enchanting designs out of the brass. The metal creation that has come to be known as Dokra, however, is a corruption of the word original Dhokra.

The term Dhokra in turn refers to the Dhokra clan of people, who through sustaining endeavour of years have perfected the art of this artistic creation. The first reference of this art form could be traced to the 2500 BC in Harappa and Mohanjodaro by the people belonging to the Kammalar clans.

The artistic creations that used to be carved out on the mixed metal of copper and kansa (these days the same is carved out in brass metal) has appropriately given the state of Jharkhand a distinct identity across the country as the Dokra artists after having traveled from the length and breadth of this country have come to stay in the state.

The beautiful carvings on the brass in fact represent socio-economic, religious and proclivity to nature manifest in the life and culture of the local people. The Malars are the original inhabitants of Jharkhand, who have come to stay at Vishunpur, East Singhbhum, Banari, Dumbarpat, West Singhbhum, Khunti, Hazaribagh, Bokaro.

The art form comes naturally to the members of the Malar clan, who simply embed their socio-cultural consciousness and emotions on the metals. In fact, the Dokra artists first take specifically kneaded soil and then make hollow designs and then they pour in the molten brass in the hollow of the dry soil. Later when the brass stuck to the temporary designs, the soil is extracted and thus the final carvings are effected.

The artistic creations brought out by the Dokra artists are used in the house make-over and general beautification purpose. The people also exchange the Dokra art forms as gifts. The brass carvings are also used as momentos. Of late, the creations of Malar artists have crossed the national boundaries. There has been a global demand for their creations.
