The firing by the police has its own backdrop.Patratu village under Chanho is inhabited by both Hindu and Muslim communities. There was a clash between two groups over the abduction of one local Zilani Ansari by a group led by Sabir Ansari, another local.

After his abduction,he was detained in captivity at the residence of one Basudev.Soon,Zilani’s men arrived and got him him freed.Tension prevailed in the area.

Next,a meeting was organized inside the premise of a school at Patratu. The police as well as Sabir, who was accused of Zilani’s abduction, arrived with his friends. This infuriated Zilani and his friends.

ome of Zilani’s men made an attempt to beat him up.To defend himself,Sabir and his friends took shelter in the police vehicle. This enraged the villagers who demanded that Sabir be handed over to them, said an eye witness account.

Some of them reportedly pelted stones on the policemen. In turn, the police opened firing injuring eight persons on the spot.In protest against the firing, the villagers held demonstration and blocked the National Highway -75 near Chanho.

“This incident is horrific and reminds me of Jalianwala. The policemen who was responsible for it must be punished”,said Goswami echoing the sentiments of Bhagat.
