By garnering support of his allies to stake claim to form a coalition government,JMM leader Hemant Soren has elicited a mixed response from the people in Jharkhand.

While many supporting the JMM,Congress,RJD and Independents such as Geeta Koda, wife of Madhu Koda,Enos Ekka,Hari Narain Rai,who were either in jail or out on bail in corruption cases, have hailed the move, those who were backing the BJP and its ally All Jharkhand Students Union as well as ally turned foe JD(U) were critical of it.

Many others like Sudhkar Manjhi,a school teacher who appear to be unconcerned about the development think, “The whole country is in deep crisis. What is happening in Jharkhand is the result of the problem rooted in the power system in New Delhi.”

In any case, once Hemant led coalition comprising JMM-Congress-Independents is sworn in and proves its strength on the floor of the House,it is expected to last till the term of the Assembly ends in 2014 when the Lok Sabha followed by the Assembly elections are slated to be held.

No body expects this government in the making to add value to the issues of governance and development in Jharkhand. “In the past we have been witness to the Madhu Koda regime backed by the Independents, Congress and the RJD.The Hemant regime can still be worse”,predicts Salman Akhter,a hawker.

Indications are that the Congress party, conscious of its image in public ,may keep a tab on the Hemant government by two means. One,it will have a coordination committee led by its top leaders. Two,they will be made responsible to ensure that it works as per the Common Minimum Programme prepared by it.This CMP is going to be made public after Soren takes oath of office.

How far this mechanism succeeds in containing power and money, hungry politicians and bureaucrats, remains to be seen. But right now Koda,Rai and Ekka who were busy defending themselves in the court were in cheers. No?

Screamed a supporter of Ekka in Simdega this morning:”Jai Jharkhand.”
