The latest mining accident in Dhanbad has renewed scrutiny of illegal coal extraction, with the BJP accusing the State government of failing to curb the activity and warning that the issue could become the focus of a wider agitation.

Three Villagers Injured in Mine Subsidence

Three people allegedly involved in illegal mining suffered injuries after subsidence at a Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL) mine in Kushalpur Kumarpatti, under the Ramkanali police outpost in Dhanbad. The incident occurred at an opencast mine and was reportedly linked to illegal extraction.

The incident has once again brought attention to the risks faced by villagers entering abandoned or closed mining areas, where unstable ground and inadequate safety arrangements can turn informal extraction into a serious hazard.

BJP Alleges Systemic Failure

Jharkhand BJP chief spokesperson Pratul Shah Deo accused the Hemant Soren government of allowing illegal mining to continue and alleged that dozens of people have died in similar mine collapses across the Dhanbad region over the past seven years.

He questioned how illegal coal extraction continues in closed mines and whether mandatory safety measures are being enforced. The allegations have not been independently established in the report.

Shah Deo also alleged that coal extracted illegally now exceeds the official production of Coal India’s subsidiary units, and accused the State government of opposing the MMDR Act, claiming its provisions could enable tougher action against illegal mining networks.

Politics Meets a Persistent Safety Problem

The BJP said ordinary villagers are bearing the human cost while illegal mining networks continue to operate, and warned of a statewide agitation if the government fails to act.

The latest incident puts the focus back on a fundamental question: whether enforcement can keep vulnerable communities away from dangerous mining sites while dismantling the networks that sustain illegal extraction.
