*A statewide shutdown called on Wednesday by activists of the separate Jharkhand movement for pensions for agitators, jobs for dependents, among several other demands, evoked a mixed response across the state.

A day after the statewide shutdown called by the Jharkhand Andolankari Sangharsh Morcha on Wednesday, conscientious citizens expressed concern about disruption in traffic and business in several parts of the state.

The shutdown brought a mixed response, with demonstrations and road blockades reported across several districts, while markets and local transport largely continued in Ranchi. At the heart of the bandh were long-pending demands concerning the state’s movement veterans, farmers, and displaced communities.

Roads became the site of protest

In Palamu, Giridih and Bokaro, protesters blocked key roads, affecting traffic for periods of the day. In Medininagar, demonstrators blocked Redma Chowk, while the Giridih-Dumri route was disrupted near the old toll plaza. In Chas, traffic was affected around ITI More.

In Dumka, the blockade at Phulo-Jhano Chowk lasted around three hours before ending following talks with the administration. Similar demonstrations were reported in Ramgarh, Gadhwa, Chatra and other areas.

Ranchi largely carried on

The capital saw a more limited impact. Protesters briefly disrupted traffic at Albert Ekka Chowk before moving to a nearby CPI office for a sit-in. Most markets remained open, while auto-rickshaws and buses largely operated normally. Rail services were also reported to be unaffected. Some long-distance bus services connecting Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Dhanbad and Hazaribagh with neighbouring states faced disruption.

What brought people onto the streets

The protesters raised demands including pension and employment for Jharkhand movement activists, recognition of activists, rehabilitation and compensation for displaced people, employment for dependants, farmers’ debt relief and pension, and protection of land, forests and water resources.

A bandh that leaves questions beyond the day

The shutdown ended as a day of uneven disruption rather than a uniform closure. Yet beneath the varying response across districts lies a common thread: demands that protesters say remain unresolved. The roadblocks may have lifted, but the issues that brought people onto those roads continue to form part of Jharkhand’s wider public debate.
