Saturday saw many married women perorming Vat Savitri Vrat in Ranchi and its adjoing areas in Jharkhand.

Traditionally,as per the Purnimanta calendar,Vat Savitri Vrat is observed during Jyeshtha Amavasya.It coincides with Shani Jayanti.In Amanta caalender Vat savitri Vrat is observed during Jayestha Purnima.

As per the tradition,married women in many parts of Maharashtra,Gujrat,South observe Vat Savitri Vrat 15 days later that of Northern states in India including Bihar and Jharkhand.However,the legend behind observing the fast is same in both calenders.

The legend has it that great Savitri tricked Lord Yama,the lord of death,and compelled Him to return the life of her husband Satyawan.As such,every married woman observes Vat Savitri Vrat for well-being and long life of her husband.
