All top functionaries of the State of Jharkhand including Governor Draupadi Murmu and Chief Minister Hemant Soren today offered floral tributes to the unsung tribal heroes of the State who fought against the British Rule on the occasion.

Their fight against the British government resulting in the death of several of these tribal leaders was officially recognised as Hul Diwas. Most front-line leaders of political parties recalled the Adivasi leaders who carried agitations against the British rule in the Santhal Pargana region of Jharkhand, home to primitive tribe Paharia and mainstream tribe Santhal.

The state government offices remained closed to mark the annual event. Incidentally, this is the second time the Hul Diwas is being observed amid Corona lockdown, the first was in 2020.

Hul Kranti Diwas is celebrated on June 30 every year to mark the tribal movement of 1855 against the British Raj. The movement was led by tribal heroes Sidho, Kanho, Chand, Bhairav, among others. They had died fighting and as such were considered martyrs

More than 50,000 tribals from 400 villages of Santhal Pargana had revolted against British Rule. The number of causalities was in four digits in this heroic episode of India’s prolonged struggle for freedom.

This movement, led by the tribals of Santhal, was the background for the revolt of 1857. The movement was led by these tribal leaders who fought with their traditional bow and arrows against British artillery.
