The UK, through the India-UK Critical Minerals Supply Chain Observatory, is establishing a satellite campus at IIT-ISM Dhanbad, Jharkhand, as part of its critical minerals supply chain cooperation.

The Observatory, with the satellite campus, plans to put focus on mining technology and innovation.

This initiative, announced earlier and made public again in Mumbai by UK PM Sir Keir Rodney Starmer in a joint press conference with India PM Narendra Modi on Thursday( October 9, 2025).

The process to construct and make the India-UK Critical Minerals Supply Chain Observatory is in the final phase.

This Observatory aims to strengthen the supply chains for critical minerals and promote green technologies through collaboration between UK and Indian academics, innovators, and industries.

Context

This initiative is part of a broader UK-India Technology Security Initiative and follows the Visit of the UK Prime Minister Sir Starmer to India on October 9-10,2025.

The satellite campus is a concrete step in creating a roadmap for cooperation and developing a community of experts in critical minerals.
