CSIR-National Metallurgical Laboratory (CSIR-NML), Jamshedpur under the aegis of Center of Excellence (CoE) funded by Department of Science & Technology, successfully organized a Workshop-cum-Training Program for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and Allied Industries on the theme “Corrosion and Wear Resistant Coating Technology” on 12th November 2025. 

The program aimed to enhance awareness, technical knowledge, and skill development among MSME and allied industry professionals in the field of advanced surface engineering and protective coating technologies. 

The event provided valuable insights into coating techniques, material selection, performance evaluation, and industrial applications for extending component life and improving reliability.

More than 35 participants representing leading MSMEs and industrial organizations from across the region actively took part in the workshop. Participating companies included Emdet Jamshedpur Pvt. Ltd., New Era Company, Shiva Inorganics, Valour Wires Pvt. Ltd., Mica Mold, Accropoly Metal Pvt. Ltd., Garg Engineers Pvt. Ltd., Promis Industry, Furnace Energy, MetaFab, Tata BlueScope, Corrkil, Khetan Udyog, Tata Motors Jamshedpur Plant.

The technical sessions covered the fundamental aspects of corrosion mechanisms, surface engineering principles, coating processes (such as electroplating, hot-dip galvanization, thermal spray, PVD, CVD, etc.), and microstructural engineering along with testing methodologies for evaluating corrosion- and wear-resistant coating performance. 

Practical demonstrations and laboratory visits offered participants hands-on exposure to the latest equipment and technologies available at CSIR-NML.

On behalf of *Dr. Sandip Ghosh Chowdhury*, Director, CSIR-NML, Jamshedpur, *Dr. S. Sivaprasad*, Senior most Chief Scientist, Head, MTE & Advisor HRG, CSIR-NML, delivered the welcome address, emphasizing the crucial role of advanced coating technologies in enhancing the durability and sustainability of industrial components. He underlined the importance of industry-research collaboration for technology transfer and capacity building in the MSME and allied sectors.

*Dr. Raghuvir Singh*, Head of the Advanced Materials and Corrosion (AMC) Division and Coordinator of the programme, briefed the participants on the activities of the Centre of Excellence on Wear and Corrosion Resistant Coating Technology, established at CSIR-NML under the aegis of the Centre of Excellence funded by DST-AMT, India. He also highlighted how this programme aims to address the specific challenges faced by MSMEs and allied industries through focused scientific and technological interventions.

Dr. Shailendra K. Jha, Convener of the Workshop-cum-Training Programme, delivered the Vote of Thanks and presented an insightful talk on “The Role of Surface Finishing Operations and Electroplating in Industry.” He shared valuable guidance with industrial participants on practical approaches to troubleshooting issues in electroplated components, emphasizing the importance of quality surface engineering in enhancing industrial productivity and performance.

Participants gained an in-depth understanding through hands-on training sessions covering Electroplating, Hot-dip Coating, HVOF, Wear and Erosion Testing, Primer and Paint Applications, and Corrosion Analysis Techniques such as Polarization, Salt-Spray, and Weight-Loss Testing. Participants expressed their appreciation for the informative and interactive sessions, acknowledging CSIR-NML’s continued support to MSMEs through knowledge dissemination, specialized training, and technical consultancy.

The program concluded with a valedictory session and certificate distribution ceremony, reaffirming CSIR-NML’s commitment to fostering innovation and technological advancement in India’s MSME ecosystem and allied sectors through applied research and industry-focused training initiatives.
