After TN and Chhattisgarh, it is Jharkhand where an Artificial Intelligence ( AI) enabled device is planned to be installed to prevent man-elephant conflict.

The AI system operates with the support of camera-mounted towers installed on poles and trees at high elevations, through which elephants can be watched for taking preventive action.

This AI-based system is on record having prevented elephant deaths on railway tracks in the Madukkarai forest range in the Coimbatore Forest Division in Tamil Nadu, helped around 2,800 safe crossings of wild elephants since its introduction in February 2024.

Indian Railways introduced this AI-based surveillance system along 700 km of railway tracks in elephant corridors across several states (Assam, West Bengal, Odisha, Kerala, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and Tamil Nadu) to prevent train collisions. The system uses sensors to provide real-time alerts to train drivers and forest staff, enabling them to slow down trains.

In Chhattisgarh, this AI-driven elephant alert system has prevented man-elephant conflict.

In Jharkhand, as per the forest department’s reply to RTI application, 133 people had died in jumbo attacks in 2023, a steep climb from 84 during the year before in 2022.

Aware of this menace, the forest department of Jharkhand is planning to install AI-generated cameras and hooter in forest areas declared as “ elephant corridor.”

Jharkhand stands at the top in the country in terms of human casualties in man-elephant conflict in 17 identified elephant corridors.

The move is expected to contain man-elephant conflict, says Saba Alam Ansari. In any case, it will be Jharkhand’s first such AI-powered hooter system designed to detect elephants entering a particular area automatically and alert the villages by sounding the hooter.

“As soon as an elephant enters the visibility range of the AI-based cameras, the hooter will sound the button automatically, alerting villagers to protect their families, properties and livestock,” said the DFO. This will be the first such project in Jharkhand.

The DFO further added that the entire system is solar-powered and can be monitored in real time through a laptop or mobile app, even during power cuts. As of now, five cameras will be installed covering the village from all sides, he said
