Ranchi: The National University of Study and Research in Law successfully organized a two-day State Level Seminar on “Geriatric Jurisprudence: Fostering a Rights-Based Paradigm for Dignified Aging” on March 28–29, 2026. The seminar brought together legal experts, academicians, policymakers, and practitioners to deliberate on critical issues concerning the rights and welfare of senior citizens.

The inaugural session was marked by the welcome address delivered by Dr. Arabinda Sahoo, Convenor of the Seminar, while the seamless coordination of the programme was ensured by the Co-Convenor, Dr. Soumyajit Mukhopadhyay.

The seminar commenced on Day 1 with registration, followed by the screening of the film “Nibhritochari” by eminent filmmaker Sourav Sarkar, highlighting the concept of positive ageing. The inaugural session was marked by the welcome address delivered by Dr. Arabinda Sahoo, Convenor of the Seminar.

The Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Prof. (Dr.) Ashok R. Patil addressed the gathering and emphasized the need for a strong legal framework to ensure dignity and protection for the elderly. The Chief Guest, Justice Shivashankar Amarannavar, in his address, highlighted the evolving legal dimensions of geriatric care and the importance of judicial sensitivity toward senior citizens.

A keynote address was delivered by Tanya Sengupta, who discussed the rights of senior citizens, focusing on Government of India initiatives, including the National Policy on Older Persons and the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007.

The sessions further explored critical themes such as healthcare rights, home care services, and palliative care, led by Dr. Abhijit Dam. Technical sessions and expert deliberations continued throughout the day, covering issues like inheritance, testamentary rights, and legal disputes concerning property.
On Day 2, discussions focused on combating ageism, promoting social inclusion, and institutional care mechanisms such as old age homes and assisted living facilities. Sessions were conducted by distinguished speakers, including Dr. Masoor Jahan and Ashish Silswal, who addressed psychological and mental health issues affecting the geriatric population.

Further, Dr. Shashi Nath Mandal elaborated on legislative measures and the role of state and non-state actors in ensuring the welfare of senior citizens.

The seminar concluded with a valedictory session beginning with the delivery of Vote of Thanks by Co -Convener Dr. Soumyajit Mukhopadhyay and certificate distribution, marking the successful culmination of an intellectually enriching and socially relevant academic event.The seminar concluded with a valedictory session and certificate distribution.
