*Jharkhand's 108 ambulance employees have deferred their proposed indefinite strike until October 26, keeping emergency ambulance services operational through October 25,2026.

A proposed statewide strike by Jharkhand’s 108 ambulance workers has been postponed following talks with the Health Department, keeping emergency services running while giving the government another opportunity to resolve long-standing grievances. The reprieve, however, is conditional: the outcome will depend on whether commitments on wages, job security and workers’ rights translate into concrete measures.

A Dispute That Threatened Emergency Care

The Jharkhand Pradesh Ambulance Karamchari Sangh had threatened an indefinite strike from October 26 over pending salaries and other employment-related concerns. The dispute raised fears of disruption to emergency transport for accident victims, critically ill patients and pregnant women, particularly in rural and remote areas.

Following discussions with Health Department Additional Chief Secretary Ajay Kumar Singh on October 22, the union decided to suspend its agitation until Chhath Puja, allowing time for the government to address its demands.

Six Areas of Concern

Union representatives reported positive discussions on six key demands, including protection against arbitrary dismissal, transparent salary payments through an escrow account, and timely payment of wages and statutory benefits.

Other issues include preventing salary deductions when ambulances break down or receive no emergency calls, ensuring minimum wages, provident fund, ESI, leave, life insurance and bonus benefits, installing biometric attendance systems, and requiring National Health Mission approval before fresh appointments.

The union also sought reinstatement of dismissed employees and improvements to the existing ambulance-service tender, including amendments or a fresh tender if necessary.

November 18: The Next Crucial Deadline

The postponement is not a withdrawal of the workers’ demands. The union has warned that failure to achieve a satisfactory resolution by November 18, 2026, could trigger an indefinite statewide strike. It has also indicated that alleged unfair action against any employee could prompt a decision on further agitation within 72 hours.

The Message: Emergency Services Need Secure Foundations

An ambulance service depends not only on vehicles and equipment, but also on the people who keep it operational. Timely wages, fair employment practices and accountable management are essential to reliable emergency care. The government must now turn assurances into verifiable action, ensuring that workers’ legitimate concerns are addressed without placing patients’ lives at risk. In healthcare, continuity is a public responsibility, not merely an administrative objective.
