Shock and grief have engulfed Bihar’s Muzaffarpur district where a number of children were reported missing. They were among 30 or more children who were on a boat that capsized in the Bagmati river today.

Officially, though 20 children were rescued, 10 children remained missing. But unofficial reports claim that the number of missing children was more than 18.

Many of their family members were learnt to be in tears knowing not whether they were alive or dead.

Bihar CM Nitish Kumar who was in Muzaffarpur was the subject of criticism. “ He has come bringing tragedy for the people”, wept Sunita Devi, sister of Ashok Kumar, 18, who figured in the missing list of 10 children.

The CM Nitish Kumar however is quoted having said that rescue operation is going on.”I have asked the district magistrate concerned to look into the matter with urgency. The state government will provide all assistance to the affected families.”

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar  said: “Rescue operation is underway… I have asked the district magistrate concerned to look into the matter with urgency. The state government will provide all assistance to the affected families.” Kumar is in Muzaffarpur to review the progress of ongoing projects in the district.
