Rumours can kill. This is what happened when a rumour of a fire on the Sasaram-Ranchi Intercity Express created panic among the passengers.  

Result? 

Three passengers jumped off the moving train and were mowed down by another train. 

The incident took place at around 8 pm on Friday near Kuman station in Jharkhand. As passengers were settling in for the night, a rumour about the fire in the train's engine sparked chaos among passengers, a PTI report said. 

“Several passengers, blinded by the fear, jumped off the train and were hit by the approaching goods train on an adjacent track”, the same PTI report added. 

Three passengers who had jumped from the running train were hit by the train and died on the spot, while four others were wounded during the incident.

"Three people were killed in the accident, while four others were injured. Three bodies have been recovered while a search operation is still going on," Latehar Deputy Commissioner Garima Singh is quoted by PTI as having said.
