Recognizing the vital role of teachers in safeguarding children's rights, UNICEF Jharkhand and Nav Bharat Jagriti Kendra (NBJK) organized a one-day workshop at Hotel Holiday Home, Ranchi, on Wednesday.
This event, part of the Adolescent Reporters Programme, brought together teachers from 70 government schools and 7 Block Education Extension Officers (BEEOs) in person, with additional 70 teachers from other government schools participating online, maximising its reach across all government schools in the district.
The workshop aimed to deepen participants' understanding of child rights by covering crucial topics such as the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), establishing active child cabinets in schools, promoting healthy diets, addressing non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in children and role of teachers, child protection, WASH in schools, and school safety preparedness.
A hands-on group activity on situation analysis further enriched the experience by presenting practical, real-life scenarios.
The event featured a distinguished panel of experts from UNICEF Jharkhand, including Dr. Kaninika Mitra, Chief; Ms. Astha Alang, Communication Specialist; Mr. Digambar Sharma, Nutrition Officer; Dr. Vanesh Mathur, Health Officer; Mr. Kumar Premchand, WASH Specialist; Ms. Laxmi Saxena, WASH Officer; and Mr. Gaurav, Child Protection Officer (NUNV).
Dr. Kaninika Mitra, Chief Field Officer of UNICEF Jharkhand, emphasized the pivotal role of teachers in the holistic development of children, stating, "Teachers act in loco parentis, taking on the responsibility to safeguard and act in the best interest of the child."
Dr. Mitra further said, "This workshop empowers teachers to translate child rights from theory into practice, enabling students to better recognize, exercise, and advocate for their rights and those of others in their everyday lives."
The workshop's goal was to build a community of well-informed and proactive educators dedicated to promoting and protecting the rights of every child.
