In a display of resilience and empowerment, the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI), operating under the Ministry of Defence, is undertaking an unprecedented Divyanjan expedition from Kanchenjunga National Park to Kilimanjaro, the highest peak of the African continent.
The ambitious journey will see a determined team traverse from the towering heights of Kanchenjunga National Park to the majestic summit of Kilimanjaro (19341 ft.) the tallest Peak of the African Continent.
The team is being flagged off by Smt. Dipti Mohil Chawla (Additional Secretary), MoD in presence of Shri Satyajit Mohanty, Secretary D(HMI), Joint Secretary (Armed Forces), Deputy Secretary, Joint Director and officials of the Ministry of Defence.
The team includes Shri Uday Kumar, a Divyangjan with a 91% above-knee amputee, Capt Shruti S. Chanaveeragoudra, Sub Mahendra Kumar Yadav, Shri Pawel Sharma and Miss Sulaxchana Tamang. The expedition, scheduled from August 2 to August 20, 2024, aims to unfurl the colossal flag before August 15. This act of patriotism will highlight the capabilities and strength of young Divyangjan and women members, demonstrating the Indian government’s commitment to inclusivity and empowerment.
In a fitting tribute to India's 78 years of independence, HMI has crafted a monumental 7,800-square-foot national flag, which was conceptualized and led by Group Captain Jai Kishan, Principal of HMI [ 52 year old air warrior]. This gigantic flag will symbolize the nation’s spirit and resilience. This flag will be a central feature of the expedition, embodying India's enduring pride and unity.
A significant highlight of the journey will be Shri Uday Kumar’s ascent. Upon reaching the summit of Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa, the expedition team will make history as the first Divyangjan Expedition to hoist the largest Indian flag atop the mountain. This act will not only signify a personal victory but also stand as a powerful symbol of the indomitable spirit of India’s youth and the Divyangjan community.
The expedition has already achieved notable success. Shri Uday Kumar's recent climb of Mt. Rhenock(16,500ft) in the Kanchenjunga National Park, West Sikkim, organised by HMI, where he proudly displayed a 780 square-foot Tricolour on 17TH MARCH 2024, has set an inspiring precedent for the upcoming challenges.
This K2K (Kanchenjunga National Park to Kilimanjaro) expedition is more than just a physical journey; it is a testament to the strength, determination, and unity of the Indian people. By celebrating 78 years of Indian independence through this extraordinary feat, the HMI is showcasing the achievements and potential of Divyangjan, inspiring both the nation and the world.
The historic expedition serves as a beacon of hope and a reminder of what can be achieved through perseverance and support. It aims to inspire future generations of Divyangjan and other underprivileged youth to pursue their dreams, no matter how daunting they may seem.
