On the World Indigenous Day 2024, a panel discussion was organized by the Center for Study and Research in Tribal Rights.
The topic of discussion was "Protection of the rights of indigenous and tribal groups in voluntary isolation and initial contact, especially with reference to highly vulnerable tribal groups in Jharkhand".
The venue was at the National University of Study and Research in Law (NUSRL), Ranchi on Thursday.
The panelists included Dr. Abhay Sagar Minz, Assistant Professor of Anthropology at Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee University, Ranchi; Mrs. Vandana Tete, Tribal poetess and writer; Ms. Sushma Asur, representative of Asur tribe; and Mr. C.R. Bijoy, an independent researcher on tribal issues.
The program started traditionally by felicitating the panelists with Angavastra and souvenirs. Dr. Abhay Sagar Minz emphasized that the development of tribal communities should be based on their self-determination and discretion.
Mrs. Vandana Tete highlighted the prevalent prejudices and myths about the primitive tribes and talked about giving them the right to live with dignity in their own social and cultural ways.
Mr. C.R. Bijoy, in the context of the tribal groups of the world, said that “the tribals neither subjugated any civilization nor accepted subjugation, but were always subjugated.”
He highlighted that even in the 21st century, many tribal communities are still outside the parameters set by national and international laws, and are also deprived of the protection and promotion of the Fifth and the Sixth Schedules in India.
Ms. Sushma Asur dispelled the myths prevalent about the Asur community andunderlined that they are still deprived of various beneficial government schemes. She expressed concern over the decreasing population of Asur and other primitive tribes and encouraged the present students and researchers to research for their all-round development.
The event was graced by the Vice Chancellor of NUSRL, Prof. (Dr.) Ashok Ramappa Patil, Registrar cum CSRTR Convenor Dr. Jisu Ketan Pattanaik, Member, Assistant Prof. Ram Chandra Oraon and many university teachers, students,and researchers.
The program was concluded with a vote of thanks by Prof. Ram Chandra Oraon. CSRTR members and other students of NUSRL played an active role in making this program successful and memorable.
