The G+7( Eight storey) building of the New Jharkhand Bhawan which was inaugurated by Chief Minister Hemant Soren on Tuesday( September 3, 2024),is showcasing a traditional tribal art form- Sohrai.

The entire wall of this new Jharkhand Bhawan showcases Sohrai paintings. This art form is created on the front walls so that they will be seen by every visitor.

The origin of the art form can be traced back to the Paleolithic period between 7000 and 400 BC. Cave paintings discovered in the area have similar animal and floral patterns as seen in the wall murals of the region.

The tribals believe that these paintings were made by their ancestors. The environmental activist, the late Bulu Imam was the first to show this connection to the outside world. Sohrai is derived from the Mundari term Soroi, which means 'to lash with a stick'.

While the old Jharkhand Bhawan is situated in Vasant Vihar, New Delhi, the new Jharkhand Bhawan is near Connaught Place along Gurudwara Bangala Sahib Lane in New Delhi.

Apparently, the new Jharkhand Bhawan spread over 9515.95 square.MTr. It has a built-up area of 2808 sq. mtr. and boasts 45 guest rooms,18 suites, and 2 VVIP suites.

The building has a huge parking facility for 100 cars. It has a water conservation facility and an environment-friendly setup.

The project launched by the BJP government led by the then CM Raghubar Das with an outlay of Rs 64.75 crore in 2017, took over seven years to complete with net expenditure exceeding Rs 1000 crores.

Understandably, the new Jharkhand Bhawan in the center of the national capital will facilitate accessibility for functionaries of Jharkhand.

The inaugural function was attended by two cabinet ministers Rameshwar Oraon and Satyanand Bhogta of the Congress and RJD respectively.

They said that the new Jharkhand building will be equipped with state-of-the-art facilities. However, none of them uttered a word about its maintenance.

Whether the state government personnel will manage it or hand it to a private body. Ideally, the quality and services provided at the new Jharkhand Bhawan depend on maintenance.

It should be run and carried out by a reputed price body to keep equipment and systems running efficiently during at least its usual life cycle.
