The state government is in the process to submit report to the Election Commission on the successor of the acting DGP Anurag Gupta who was directed by it to remove him from the post he was holding.

This means the state will have a new DGP under whose guidance the assembly polls will be held in Jharkhand.

As it is, the EC on Saturday directed the state government of Jharkhand  to immediately remove acting Director General of Police Anurag Gupta.

Also, the EC asked Gupta to hand over charge to the senior-most DGP officer available in the cadre, it is learnt.

The EC took the decision based on a history of complaints against the Anurag Gupta and actions taken by the poll panel in previous elections, report accessed by JharkhandStateNews.com said.

During the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the Anurag Gupta  was relieved of the charge of ADG (Special Branch) after allegations of “bias” by the ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha.

Gupta was then reassigned to the office of the Jharkhand Resident Commissioner in Delhi and asked not to return to the state till the elections were on,according to a report.

During the Rajya Sabha elections in Jharkhand in 2016, as additional DGP, Anurag Gupta faced allegations of misuse of authority and the EC had formed an inquiry committee.

Based on the findings, an FIR was registered on March 29, 2018 and the Jharkhand government in 2021 gave permission to investigate under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.

The EC asked the state government to comply with its directions and submit a report by 7 pm on Saturday.

The EC also asked the state to submit a panel of senior IPS officers to be considered for the post by 10 am on Monday.
