

Every year October month is globally celebrated as ‘Dyslexia Awareness Month’. In this context Jharkhand Council of Educational Research and Training and Jharkhand Education Project Council has taken proactive steps to raise awareness and promote understanding on SpecificLearning Disabilities under Walk4Dyslexia and GoRedtheme.
Dyslexia is a neurological invisible disability that primarily affects an individual’s ability to read, write and spell accurately. It is a common condition that is not related to intelligence of a person. As per different sources, 1 in 5 individual have Dyslexia and 1 out 0f 20 usually gets identified.

In a joint effort of Jharkhand Education Departments and the ChangeInkk Foundation, a state-level "Walk for Dyslexia" event was organized on 22nd October, in JCERT Ratu Campus, Ranchi. This event garnered participation of over 200 participants including teachers, students, officials from JEPC and JCERT, District Institute of Education and Training (DIET) faculties of Ranchi and thecivil society organizations such as Unicef, Room to Read,Piramal Foundation, Dream A Dream, CINI Tata Trust, India Partnership for Early Learning, Dani Sports Foundation, Ugam Foundation, and others. To celebrate the strength of children with learning disabilities, people were wearing red cloths, badges holding banners made by students and silently walked close to 2 kms to support the cause and raise awareness about learning disabilities across society.
To address the crowd Deputy Director, Shri Pradip Kumar Choubey highlighted that “ this disability has formally recognized by Right of Person with Disability Act (RPwDAct) 2016: however significant efforts are still needed to ensure these students are integrated into mainstream school and not left behind”
As part of Dyslexia Awareness Month Campaign, a state-level webinar was organized by JCERT on 4th October, which engaged more than 50 participants consisting from all 22 DIETs. Following the informative webinar, 520 walks have been conducted across the state. The state-level webinar was led by Sangeeta Kumari, Nodal-State Resource Group, Inclusive Education, JCRET, along with ChangeInkk Foundation’s state team. The nodal has highlighted that “SLDs including dyslexia, dysgraphia,dyscalculia effect individual with average or above average IQs but hinder their ability to process language, both speaking and written. These challenge is manifest as difficulties in reading, writing, spelling and math and many individual with SLD suffer silently, misjudged as lazy or incompetent. As a community we have to take charge to redefine these myths”.
These initiatives would promote awareness on dyslexiaand foster a more inclusive and informed environment, working towards equal opportunities for all.
A round table discussion with all the CSO partners had organized followed by the walk to discuss possible interventions the department can initiated to identify our SLD students and provide possible support remediation and accommodation support to them.
