Over 55 Lakh pilgrims visited Gangasagar Mela during Makarsankranti in West Bengal this year. On the last leg of Sankranti today, around 25 Lakh devotees took a holy dip at the confluence of the Bay of Bengal and Bhagirathi. 

According to official sources, more than 1 crore 10 lakh pilgrims visited Gangasagar Mela from the 1st of this Month.  Lakhs of devotees offered puja to Kapil Muni Temple after taking a holy dip at Sagar. Thousands of pilgrims have already started their journey to their destinations after completing the rituals.

According to official sources, no major untoward incident has been reported. Altogether 6 persons died during the Mela as of now while 9 devotees have been airlifted to Kolkata for treatment. More than 6 thousand 6 hundred missing pilgrims have been handed over to their families safely. 

Devotees arrived Gangasagar island this time more smoothly as the administration put up large number of vessels following dredging in Muriganga river.

The administration took special measures to keep the Mela clean and ecofriendly.  Number of Bio toilets, Mobile Cloth Changing Rooms, Night Shelters, arrangements for pouch drinking water were made for the convenience of devotees. 

Evening Sagar Arati on the bank of sea attracted huge crowd which reflected cultural and religious heritage of the country. Various Religious organization, NGOs and Social Welfare organisations carried out their different activities for the devotees.
