The Delhi Assembly election was being seen as a do-or-die battle for both Arvind Kejriwal and his AAP.

Not wrongly though. The victory of BJP’s Pravesh Verma who defeated the AAP’s chief Arvind Kejriwal, has raised a question-why he lost whereas JMM acting President and CM Hemant Soren won in the Assembly polls last year?

The question is pertinent. Both were CMs belonging to the opposition camp of I.N.D.I.A.
Now, BJP is all set to form the government in Delhi after 27 years while the JMM led by CM Hemant Soren did not let BJP do so in Jharkhand.

It has not only signalled a rejection of Kejriwal's leadership but has also potentially dismantled the AAP's ambitions of becoming a pan-Indian alternative to the BJP.

Even after being in charge of municipal corporations, the AAP failed to effectively tackle civic woes, with potholed roads and garbage strewn across neighbourhoods being a familiar sight across Delhi.

Most importantly, in Jharkhand, the JMM led coalition defeated the BJP and formed the government.

This did not happen with the AAP led by Kejriwal. One difference between the two parties and their leaders was this. After the ED arrested him last year, Hemant Soren resigned as CM and ensured that his party MLA Champai Soren succeeds him as CM.

This helped him gain support of the people on moral ground. On the contrary, Kejriwal did not resign as the CM even though he was jailed on serious charges of corruption in the liquor scam. This seems to have disappointed many people.

It seems to have ultimately led to resentment among the middle class, which comprises a big chunk of Delhi's voters.

Also, the lower and middle class's unhappiness over the AAP's governance record on issues such as air and water pollution, and an unclean Yamuna seems to have paid dividends for the BJP which secured a land slide victory in Assembly polls 2025.
