An intense gunfight between security forces and Naxal insurgents in Chhattisgarh's Sukma district is going on.
Already, Naxals have suffered a heavy loss as security forces have eliminated 16 Naxals.
“The exchange of fire is still ongoing”, according to SP Sukma, Kiran Chavan.
The encounter began on Saturday in the Kerlapal forest area as part of a joint anti-Naxal operation conducted by the District Reserve Guard (DRG) and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). Security forces launched the operation based on specific intelligence inputs regarding the Naxal movement in the region.
Authorities confirmed that the joint team moved out on Friday, and intermittent firing has continued since early morning on Saturday. Search operations are currently underway in the encounter site and surrounding forested terrain.
Sukma remains one of the most Naxal-affected districts in Chhattisgarh's Bastar region, known for frequent attacks by insurgents. This latest operation follows an IED blast in Narayanpur district on Friday, which left a jawan injured.
Officials have assured that a detailed statement will be issued once the operation concludes. The death toll of Naxals can go up.
