Indian Railways and Forest Department have decided to identify areas of wild elephants and resolved to ensure their security and safety.

This joint decision is the outcome of a high level coordination meeting held between the officials of railways and forest department inside the office of the Chief Conservator of Forests (CCF) in Hijli, West Bengal.

This meeting has gained significance following the recent elephant-train collision involving Train No. 12022 that led to death of three elephants including a female and its calf after they were run over by a train in West Bengal’s Jhargram on Friday early morning.

The meeting was chaired by CCF Sandeep Sundriyal and Kharagpur Divisional Railway Manager K.R. Chaudhary. It was attended by senior officials from both the Railway and Forest Departments, including the Chief Wildlife Warden, Divisional Forest Officers (DFOs), and Additional DRM (Operations).

Notably main subjects discussed in the meeting included implementation of early warning systems, identification of critical elephant corridors, and the development of time-bound collaborative action plans to prevent future incidents. Both departments reiterated their commitment to wildlife safety and smoother railway operations through enhanced coordination.
