Two first-of-its-kind events on Independence Day 2025 are in the pipeline in Jharkhand.

Both are connected with former CM and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha co-founder Shibu Soren, popularly known as ‘Dishom Guru or Guruji’, who passed away on August 4, 2025.

August 15 is the date when the Shradh Karm( the spectrum of rituals and actions performed with complete faith (Shradh) to honour, appease, and provide sustenance to the departed soul), will be performed in accordance with traditional belief and rituals by his son Mr Hemant Soren. The event will be followed by Bhoj(party to all relatives and friends) in honour of the departed soul.

As he has been performing these rituals at his ancestral village, Nemra, Ramgarh, since August 4, Mr.Hemant Soren has decided to complete the Shradh function meticulously, wearing untailored cream colour cloth ,reflecting his deep emotional bond with his father Shibu Soren,a feature missing among many sons in India today.

In his absence, Governor Santosh Gangwar is going to hoist the national flag at Morahabadi Maidan in Ranchi while Santhal Pargana Divisional Commissioner or any other functionary will do so in Dumka on August 15.

As per official tradition, while the Governor unfurls the national flag in Dumka, the CM does it at Morahabadi.

Another ‘first’ is the Shibu Soren Memorial Football Tournament. It will be held on August 15 at APJ Kalam High School, Mango, Jawahar Nagar, in memory of former Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren.

The announcement was made by the tournament’s organizing committee chairman and social worker, Dr. Afroz Shakeel.

The one-day tournament is being organized by the Aman Welfare Society in collaboration with APJ Kalam High School. A total of 12 teams from different areas will participate, competing for the championship trophy named after Dishom Guru Shibu Soren.
