Many traditional systems of medicine recommend certain herbs to control diabetes and now scientists have found a hormone, found in both mammals and plants that can lower sugar levels in the blood.

A new research published in the December 2015 issue of The FASEB Journal reports that Italian scientists have found that plant and mammal hormone, abscisic acid, taken in low doses reduce glycemia (glucose levels) in both rats and humans.

“These results warrant further studies, aimed at developing new pharmacologic approaches to diabetes prevention and treatment,” said an author of the report Mirko Magnone of the Department of Experimental Medicine at the University of Genova School of Medicine, Italy.

Scientists examined the presence of abscisic acid in plants and fruits and explored the effect of abscisic acid-rich vegetable extracts on glycemia (blood sugar) in rats and in humans.
