Keeping in mind the problem of five million hearing-impaired people, the Union Government today approved setting up of a institute for research and training on sign language to provide them increased accessibility in education, workplace and other activities of life.

The Union Cabinet gave its nod for the proposal to set up Indian Sign Language Research and Training Centre (ISLRTC).

ISLRTC will be set up as a Society under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 and will function under the aegis of the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.
