After three kids who were sold by a Saint Teresa founded Missionaries of Charity(MC), the police in Ranchi said one of the accused, Sister Konsalia had 'confessed' to selling three children for money and giving the fourth child away.
However, the Jharkhand police in dark about the background of these kids. Who were their fathers and mothers? From where they had been admitted at Missionaries of Charity.
Ranchi SSP Anis Gupta says that during interrogation, Sister Konsalia had "confessed" to selling the three children to three people. However, he did not say how much money was involved in the alleged sale.
On 11 July, the cops had rescued a child from Jharkhand's Simdega district, taking the total number of rescued children in the case to three. Gupta told media persons that the search for the fourth child was on.
Reports indicate that the police had come to know about the child in Simdega after questioning the two staff of the MC. It is learned that all the four babies were sold last year from MC run Nirmal Hriday, the shelter located in Ranchi's Jail Road.
All the three rescued babies have been sent to a shelter home. Two of them were returned to the families who had bought them to prevent 'medical and psychological problems faced by the kids.'
On Saturday a video surfaced online, purportedly of a sister Konalia's confession. The clip shows the nun admitting to her crime. She even confessed that she had sold two more babies, but she asserted, she does not where they were now.
But the Catholic Bishop Conference of India, Theodore Mascarenhas has claimed that the same sister told the lawyer of MC that she was not involved in the baby-selling racket-crime and that the police had taken her statement under 'pressure'.
In any case, the sold babies were recovered by the police on information passed by the "sister.' In fact, the 'racket' had come to light after a female employee of Nirmal Hriday,Anima Indwar and Sister Konsalia, wgo was in-charge of the local shelter, were arrested on the charge of selling a child born to a minor inmate of the shelter home earlier in July. The MC sister was arrested on July 5 for allegedly selling a child born to a minor inmate of the home to a couple from Utter Pradesh.Indwar was arrested on July 4.
The accused are in judicial custody. The judicial magistrate court in Ranchi had remanded them in four-day police custody on Friday.
