As the Sun advanced from east to west in the sky on the martyrdom day of Bhagwan Birsa Munda, top functionaries in the country and the state of Jharkhand beelined to pay respectful tributes to the revered Dharti Aaba, Birsa Munda.
Birsa Munda, the tribal super martyr who is popularly called ‘ Bhagwan’, continued to be a brave fighter whose life symbolised courage, self-respect, and an unwavering commitment to justice.
Through the historic Ulgulan, he awakened the spirit of resistance against oppression and inspired tribal communities to safeguard their rights, identity, and dignity.
It remains a matter of deep personal reverence that CP Radhakrishnan had the opportunity to pay his respects at his sacred birthplace, Ulihatu, on the very first day of assuming office as Governor of Jharkhand and again recently as Vice President of India.
Today, he recalled Birsa Munda on X, stating, ‘Bhagwan Birsa Munda’s sacrifice and ideals continue to guide the nation in its pursuit of social justice, empowerment, and inclusive development. His legacy will remain a lasting source of inspiration for generations to come.’
Several others paid tributes to him. They were Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah. In Jharkhand, Governor Santosh Gangwar and Chief Minister Hemant Soren paid floral tributes to the tribal icon on his death anniversary.
Munda, who was born on November 15, 1875, in Jharkhand, had led a tribal uprising against the British. He died at the young age of 25 on June 9, 1900, while in custody.

“Bhagwan Birsa Munda is remembered—both across the country and abroad. Studying his history reveals the nature of his struggle and the role he played in our country’s freedom movement,” Gangwar told reporters after paying tribute to the statue of the tribal warrior at the Kokar Memorial here.
“His (Birsa Munda) struggle for tribal identity and social justice will continue to inspire people,” Gangwar posted on X.
Soren said, “Even after nearly a century and a quarter, he is still being remembered by tribal communities across the country, and by all sections of society. He must have possessed certain qualities and created such a history that people have been remembering him for centuries.
The CM further said, “He is one of the unforgettable warriors from this heroic land of Jharkhand. We are proud of him.” The governor and the CM also offered floral tributes to the icon’s statue at Birsa Chowk here.
