Rupi Soren, who was accompanied by other family members, received posthumously the Padma Bhushan award conferred on the JMM founder and former Chief Minister Shibu Soren inside the Rashtrapati Bhawan today ( June 23, 2026).

President Droupadi Murmu presented the award to Rupi Soren, who was accompanied by her daughter-in-law, Kalpana Soren, and Chief Minister Hemant Soren.

Popularly known as Guruji or Dishum Guru, Shibu Soren was the prime leader of the Jharkhand movement, and after the murder of his father cum teacher, Shobaran Soren, by money lenders and led the anti-liquor movement.

Soren passed away on August 4, 2025, at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi. After his demise, he was conferred with the prestigious Padma Bhushan, India's third-highest civilian honor.

Shibu Soren was awarded for his "distinguished service of a high order" across various disciplines, including social and cultural.

Incidentally, Padma awards are presented annually on Republic Day by the Government of India.
