A senior Naxalite who has been absconding for a long time is in the custody of the police in Jharkhand.

He is a banned CPI (Maoist) politburo member, Misir Besra, who was carrying a bounty of more than ₹1 crore on his head and wanted in 141 cases.

Besra was apprehended between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. on Tuesday (July 28, 2026) in the border area between Dhanbad and Giridih districts in Jharkhand.

The 65-year-old red rebel, a resident of Madnadih in Giridih district, was nabbed from the Maniadih area under the Barwadda Police Station limits, it is learnt.

Besides Besra, two other Maoists, including one carrying a ₹15 lakh reward on his head, were also arrested during the operation.

Their arrest is considered a big success of the Jharkhand police.
