The National University of Study and Research in Law (NUSRL), Ranchi, organised its Orientation Programme for the newly admitted students of B.A. LL.B. (Hons.), B.B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) and LL.M.for the Academic Session 2026–27. 

The programme witnessed the presence of distinguished members of the judiciary and legal fraternity, who inspired students as they embarked on their legal education.

The programme was graced by Hon'ble Mr. Justice Mahesh Sharadchandra Sonak, Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court and Chancellor of NUSRL, as the Chief Guest. Hon'ble Mr. Justice Sujit Narayan Prasad, Judge, Jharkhand High Court, attended as the Guest of Honour, while Mr. Rohitashya Roy, Advocate General, Government of Jharkhand, was the Special Guest. The ceremony commenced with the traditional lighting of the ceremonial lamp followed by the University Song.

Addressing the students, Hon'ble Chief Justice Mahesh Sharadchandra Sonak recalled Mahatma Gandhi's timeless words: "Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever." He emphasised that the true purpose of education is not merely to accumulate knowledge but to develop the ability to think critically, positively and independently.

Speaking about the rapidly evolving technological landscape, he observed that while Artificial Intelligence and modern technology have transformed the way people work and learn, they cannot replace human emotions, values and wisdom. He remarked that a person's thoughts shape language, language influences actions, actions become habits, habits form values, and values ultimately determine one's destiny. 

Stressing the importance of an open mind, he said, "The mind is like a parachute- it works best when it is open." He encouraged students to embrace every experience in life, whether favourable or challenging, as an opportunity to learn and grow.

Welcoming the students and their parents, Hon'ble Mr. Justice Sujit Narayan Prasad expressed pride in addressing the future members of the legal profession. 

He acknowledged the hard work and dedication that enabled the students to secure admission to a premier law university. He urged them to remain conscious of their responsibilities towards society and to uphold the values of justice throughout their careers.

Justice Prasad observed that a university is far more than a collection of classrooms; it is a place where character, ethics and leadership are nurtured. He highlighted that the legal profession is not merely a career but a service to society. 

Referring to the impact of Artificial Intelligence and emerging technologies, he encouraged students to become lifelong learners, noting that studying law and practising it in courts require continuous learning, discipline and perseverance.

Addressing the gathering, Mr. Rohitashya Roy, Advocate General of Jharkhand**, advised students to cherish the friendships they build during their university years, as these relationships often become lifelong professional associations. 

Sharing experiences from his own journey in the legal profession, he explained how every stage of his career offered valuable lessons. He encouraged students to learn from their teachers, peers and every opportunity that comes their way. He also appreciated NUSRL's contribution towards strengthening legal education and the justice delivery system.

Welcoming the incoming batch, Vice-Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) Ashok R. Patil congratulated the students on the beginning of a significant new chapter in their lives. He encouraged them to embrace university life with confidence and curiosity. Reassuring parents, he affirmed that the University is committed to the academic, personal and professional development of every student.

Prof. Patil highlighted that NUSRL offers a holistic learning environment through its academic centres, committees, research initiatives and extracurricular activities, all designed to nurture leadership, professional excellence and social responsibility. Drawing inspiration from the thoughts of Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam and Nelson Mandela, he urged students to pursue excellence with integrity and perseverance.

During the programme, a book on Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) was formally released. The publication has been developed under the leadership of Prof. (Dr.) Ashok R. Patil, Prof. (Dr.) K. Syamala Kandadai, and Prof. (Dr.) M.R. Srinivas Murthy.

A specially curated introductory film showcasing the University's academic ecosystem, research culture, student life and campus facilities was also screened for the incoming students and their parents. The film was produced by Mr. Pankaj Kumar Pathak, Public Relations Officer, NUSRL.

The Orientation Programme concluded with enthusiastic participation of faculty members, officers, staff, students and parents, marking the beginning of an inspiring academic journey for the newest members of the NUSRL family. The event reinforced the University's commitment to academic excellence, ethical leadership and nation-building through quality legal education.
