All shops, market complexes, and schools remained closed. The traffic was thin on all roads connecting the city centre to Albert Ekka Chowk in Ranchi.

This was in response to the statewide bandh being enforced by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the Jharkhand capital on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, from 8:00 AM to 12.00 noon.

Although the court and the state/ central government offices remained open, the attendance was learnt to be below normal till 12.30 pm today.

In neighbouring villages and towns such as Ramgarh, Hazaribagh, Giridih, Lohardaga and Daltongunj, most schools and business and trading centres remained under the lock and key.

Even the traffic on national highways was learnt to be below normal. However, government and public sector banks and medicine shops remained open throughout the day.

The bandh appears to have elicited popular people’s support against what a group of students described as “ Naukari Chori”( Theft of jobs) by the Hemant Soren government as well as the police crackdown, lathicharge, use of tear gas and water cannons against JPSC and JSSC student job aspirants near the state Assembly in Ranchi on Monday.

As many as 60 students were injured, nine of them seriously. Even the police claimed nine cops were injured. 

Student leader Devendra Nath Mahto, who was admitted to Sadar Hospital in Ranchi on August 10, 2026, after his health worsened following a nine-day hunger strike and a protest outside the Jharkhand State Assembly over state recruitment exam irregularities, was recovering after doctors gave him a salt-and-water solution (like normal saline).

Reports claimed that BJP workers blocked major routes and burned tyres at locations like Harmu Chowk, Kishorganj, Kanke Road, and near Nucleus Mall.

Auto-rickshaws, buses, and private vehicle movements faced widespread disruption. Schools and Markets: Prominent private schools (including DPS and DAV branches) stayed closed as a precaution. Urban commercial centers and local markets saw lowered attendance and shuttered shops.

High alert status was declared with roughly 3,000 security personnel deployed across Ranchi to monitor law and order.

What remains Open and operational: Emergency Services? Hospitals, pharmacies, ambulances, milk booths, and water supplies remain fully functional.

Trains run on schedule with enhanced security at stations, and official government offices and banks remain technically open despite transport hurdles.
