In an apparent setback to the Soren government, the Supreme Court on Monday issued notices to the Centre, the Jharkhand government and the Jharkhand Public Service Commission on a plea seeking an independent, time-bound CBI probe into alleged irregularities in the Jharkhand Combined Civil Services Preliminary Examination 2025.

A bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant, along with Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana, sought responses from the Union government, the state government, the JPSC and other respondents.

Senior advocate Manan Kumar Mishra, appearing for the petitioner, said the plea seeks either a CBI inquiry or an investigation by a former Supreme Court judge.

The plea was filed by activist Harisharan Devgan through advocate Satyam Singh Rajput. It raises concerns over the conduct and credibility of the preliminary examination held on April 19, 2026, pursuant to JPSC Advertisement No. 01/2026.

"The present writ petition under Article 32 of the Constitution of India is being preferred in public interest seeking urgent intervention of this court in relation to serious and substantial concerns regarding the integrity, fairness, transparency and credibility of the Jharkhand Combined Civil Services Preliminary Competitive Examination 2025, conducted by respondent no. 2 Jharkhand Public Service Commission pursuant to Advertisement No. 01/2026 on April 19, 2026," the petition said.
