Two days after the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Jamshedpur Branch Office, organized an Industry Meet-cum-Awareness Programme for MSME manufacturers and BIS licensees at Hotel Dayal International, Jamshedpur, on 25 August 2026, manufacturers appear to be in a state of hope to fulfil the criteria for gaining BIS licenses.

This is considered a forward move among sponge iron manufacturers in Jharkhand. 

As it is, around 40 manufacturers had participated in the programme. It had put focus on providing technical guidance and handholding support for BIS certification and promoting adherence to Indian Standards.

The programme was inaugurated by Shri Kunal Kumar, Director & Head, BIS, Jamshedpur, who highlighted BIS's commitment to supporting MSMEs throughout the certification process, from obtaining a BIS licence to its effective operation and continued compliance with Indian Standards. 

He emphasized that such programmes provide an important platform for addressing industry concerns and promoting quality consciousness.

Sponge Iron manufacturers and Cement industry representatives were specially invited for discussions on relevant Indian Standards and Quality Control Orders. 

Shri Kunal Kumar encouraged Sponge Iron manufacturers to come under the purview of BIS Product Certification by obtaining BIS licences and ensuring conformity to applicable Indian Standards. He highlighted the benefits of BIS certification in improving product quality, enhancing consumer confidence and creating wider market opportunities.

A representative from the MSME sector appreciated BIS for organizing the programme and emphasized the role of quality certification and Indian Standards in enhancing the competitiveness of MSMEs.

Technical sessions covered BIS Product Certification Guidelines, Grant of Licence, operation of licences, retesting of samples, factory and market surveillance, CBTF facilities for MSMEs, the BIS Act, 2016, e-BIS Portal and BIS Standards Portal. 

Discussions were also held on the draft standards for Low Heat Portland Cement (First Revision of IS 12600) and Sulphate Resisting Portland Cement (First Revision of IS 12330).

Shri Prabhu Nath Yadav, Scientist-E/Director, BIS, Jamshedpur, conducted sessions on Indian Standards applicable to Sponge Iron and Quality Control Orders (QCOs), while Shri Dilip Chattar, Scientist-D/Joint Director, and Shri Rahul Kumar, Scientist-D/Joint Director, conducted sessions on certification-related procedures and surveillance requirements.

The programme concluded with an Open House Discussion, wherein industry representatives raised queries and shared feedback on Indian Standards, testing, certification and operation of BIS licences.
