A protest following the death of a road-accident victim escalated at Pandra police station, leaving the officer-in-charge injured and public property damaged, prompting arrests and a wider investigation into the violence.
Grievance Turns Into Confrontation
The incident followed the death of a resident of Gumla district who had been undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Ranchi after being injured in a road accident in the Pandra area. Police had seized the trailer involved in the accident.
After his death, family members and others blocked roads, demanding that the trailer owner be brought before them and seeking compensation. The group later reached Pandra police station.
Assurance Fails to End Tension
Police said the station in-charge assured the family that the compensation issue would be addressed and that legal action would be taken against the trailer owner and driver. The family subsequently called off the protest.
However, some members of the gathering later returned and confronted officer-in-charge Manish Gupta. The confrontation escalated, with the officer allegedly being struck on the head. The station was vandalised and a police vehicle damaged. Additional forces were deployed to restore order, and Gupta was taken to hospital.
Arrests and Wider FIR
Police have arrested eight people, including two women, in connection with the attack and damage to public property. An FIR has also been registered against 30 named individuals and 500 unidentified people, according to the city SP.
Investigators are examining CCTV footage to identify others allegedly involved, with police indicating that further arrests may follow.
Accountability Must Run Both Ways
The case now has two clear strands: pursuing the road-accident investigation and compensation concerns through law, while holding accountable those accused of attacking public servants and damaging public property. The credibility of the response will lie in ensuring that the original grievance receives due process without allowing violence to become a substitute for it.
