As a major road-widening proposal brings development and conservation into focus, Ranchi’s youth are using digital platforms to ask a crucial question: can the city improve its connectivity without sacrificing so much of its natural heritage?

An innovative approach has been devised to save trees in Jharkhand.

A Road Project, a Forest of Concerns

A proposed road-widening project between Vivekananda School in Dhurwa and Naya Sarai, spanning approximately six kilometres, has raised concerns over the possible felling of nearly 7,000 trees. The project, estimated to cost around ₹177 crore, aims to improve road infrastructure and traffic movement. However, the potential environmental cost has prompted citizens to question whether alternatives could reduce the loss of tree cover.

Instagram Becomes a Platform for Conservation

Ranchi’s young environmental advocates have launched a campaign on Instagram, sharing posts, videos, artwork and messages to build public awareness. Their appeal is straightforward: development is necessary, but the destruction of mature trees should not be treated as an unavoidable consequence without exploring other options.

The campaign highlights the role trees play in maintaining cleaner air, moderating urban temperatures and sustaining ecological balance. It also urges citizens to participate in the conversation and support efforts to preserve the city’s green cover.

Can Infrastructure and Ecology Coexist?

The proposed road is expected to improve connectivity, but the scale of the anticipated tree loss makes environmental assessment and careful planning essential. Possible design alternatives, reduced tree felling and appropriate protection measures deserve serious consideration before irreversible decisions are taken.

The Larger Message: Progress Must Leave Room for Nature

A city’s development should be measured not only by wider roads and faster journeys, but also by the quality of life it sustains. Trees provide benefits that cannot be recreated overnight, making their preservation a long-term public interest.

Ranchi’s young citizens are reminding decision-makers that development and environmental responsibility must advance together. The lasting test of this project will be whether better connectivity can be achieved while protecting as much of the city’s natural inheritance as possible.
