The accused, identified as Thomas Soren, is also the principal of St Alphonsa School and has reportedly been absconding since the allegations came to light. The police is yet to trace and book him, according to a report.

A 32-year-old tribal woman employed at a missionary school in Godda who has accused its priest and principal of repeated sexual assault, forced abortion, and threats is yet to get justice. Though an FIR was registered and police investigation was reportedly 'underway', the accused priest Thomas Soren remains beyond the reach of the long arm of the law.

Allegations of Repeated Assault

According to the woman’s complaint, Father Thomas Soren, principal of St Alphonsa School, offered her a job at the mission. She joined in June to cook for hostel students, with a promised monthly salary of ₹9,000; her husband was offered ₹7,000.

Two days after she began work, on June 19, Soren allegedly called her into his bedroom and raped her. She claims he threatened to dismiss the couple and jeopardise their children’s education if she disclosed the assault. She further alleged that he repeatedly assaulted her after arranging for her husband to be sent away on different pretexts.

Pregnancy, Medical Complications

After more than a month, the woman discovered she was pregnant. She alleges that Soren gave her medication to terminate the pregnancy, resulting in heavy bleeding and deteriorating health. She later informed her husband, and the couple confronted the priest. According to her complaint, he apologised and offered medical assistance.

She was treated at hospitals in Godda, underwent a procedure to clear her uterus and required a blood transfusion. The complaint states that approximately ₹60,000 was spent on treatment, which the priest later allegedly threatened to recover from her.

Police Investigation and Political Reaction

Godda SDPO Akash Bhardwaj confirmed that an FIR had been registered at Sundarpahari police station and an investigation had begun. The accused is reportedly absconding. Union Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth criticised the state government over the case and called for strict action, while making broader allegations concerning the safety and rights of tribal women.

The Larger Concern: Safety and Accountability

The allegations underline the need for safe workplaces, protection from coercion and timely access to justice. The investigation must establish the facts, ensure the survivor’s dignity and safety, and hold anyone found responsible accountable under the law.
