*Chief Minister Hemant Soren said that the education policy should be formulated keeping Jharkhand’s linguistic, cultural and social diversity in mind.

Jharkhand is looking to shape an education framework that reflects its linguistic and cultural diversity while preparing students for a changing world. Chief Minister Hemant Soren has directed officials to develop a practical, forward-looking policy that balances learning in mother tongues with communication skills, technology and talent development.

Learning Begins with the Language of the Child

Reviewing the draft of the Jharkhand State Language Education Policy presented by the School Education and Literacy Department, Soren emphasised that students’ mother tongues and local languages must find a meaningful place in classrooms. The objective is to strengthen children’s knowledge, learning outcomes, skills and ability to express themselves.

The draft covers three stages: early childhood education to Class 2, Classes 3 to 5, and Classes 6 to 12. Mother tongues and local languages are proposed to be integrated across all three stages.

Beyond Textbooks: Skills for the Future

The Chief Minister stressed that education must nurture students’ interests, talents and practical abilities alongside academic learning. He called for consideration of hockey as part of skill-based education, recognising Jharkhand’s consistent contribution to the sport.

He also emphasised spoken English classes and digital proficiency, noting their importance in expanding opportunities in higher education, employment and communication.

The Message: Rooted in Identity, Ready for the World

A meaningful education system should neither distance children from their linguistic roots nor limit their future possibilities. Jharkhand’s proposed policy has the opportunity to bring these priorities together. Its real success, however, will depend on effective implementation, suitable learning resources and trained teachers who can translate the vision into classroom experience.
