RBI since May 19 when RBI announced the withdrawal of ₹2,000 notes in circulation, nearly 76 per cent of these currency notes in circulation have been returned to banks. This means nearly 34 percent of Rs 2000 notes in circulation remain beyond the reach of the banks.

The return took place mostly through deposits, according to the Reserve Bank of India Monday statement.

"According to the data received from the banks, the total value of ₹2,000 bank notes received back from circulation after the announcement on May 19 is ₹2.72 lakh crore up to June 30, 2023.”  "Consequently, ₹2,000 banknotes in circulation as at the close of business on June 30 stood at ₹0.84 lakh crore," the RBI said in a statement.
