Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC) conducted the JSSC Excise Constable requirement exam to appoint 524 constables.
To apply for this post of constable, the age criteria of candidate varied from 18-30 years on the basis of his/her ‘reservation’ status and minimum education of 10th grade from a recognized education board.
The selection process involved clearing three stages.First, it evaluates language proficiency and general knowledge skills. The second stage is the Physical Test. The third stage is the Medical Examination.
As per these criteria, nearly 3.5 lakh candidates filed applications and during their second stage, authorities began assessing their running abilities in this exam.
The Running ability test kick started on August 22,2024. And it was suddenly halted by the order of the Chief Minister Hemant Soren on September 2,2024.
Why the recruitment policy stopped mid way? As many as 12 excise constable aspirants had collapsed on track during their running ability test and died.
As per the test requirement, they were supposed to run for 10 km. But a dozen of them had collapsed on the final lap.
For example, Deepak Kumar Paswan, who was among the candidates called for physical tests at Palamau’s Chiyanki airstrip on August 28, died in a Ranchi hospital.
Their post mortem reports indicate that these candidates had succumbed to heat exhaustion.
Another cause based on suspicion is attributed to “ some of them taking performance enhancing drugs” out their desperation to become the ‘sarkari sipahi’ of the state excise department responsible for regulating liquor business in Jharkhand.
The politics has taken its own form.
The opposition BJP has criticised the process to undertake physical test of excise constable candidates in hot belt of Palamau where day temperature revolved around 34°.
While preferring not to react on the BJP’s accusation, the Chief Minister Hemant Soren has directed the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commision to pause the physical test drive till September 4( for three days).
