The Indian Institute of Metals (IIM), Jamshedpur Chapter, has hosted the 13th edition of the Prof. S. N. Sinha Memorial Materials & Metallurgy Quiz (SNSM3Q-2025).

It was held on August 8, 2025, at the CSIR-National Metallurgical Laboratory (CSIR-NML), Burmamines, Jamshedpur. The event, dedicated to the legacy of the late Prof. S. N. Sinha—a visionary educator and former IIM Jamshedpur Chapter President.

This institute continues to serve as a prestigious platform for young minds to engage with the fields of materials science and metallurgy.

This year’s quiz witnessed enthusiastic participation from 102 students across 29 schools, accompanied by their respective teachers, highlighting the growing interest among school students in the field of metallurgical sciences.

The event was inaugurated by Dr. Sandip Ghosh Chowdhury, Director, CSIR-NML, who graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. 

In his inaugural address, Dr. Chowdhury emphasized the critical role of materials science in national development, particularly under the Make in India initiative. 

He urged students to consider careers in metallurgy, underscoring its relevance in achieving sustainable technological advancement, critical metals self-reliance, and addressing global environmental challenges such as greenhouse gas emissions.

Joining him were esteemed dignitaries, including Prof. Ashok Kumar, Head of the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, NIT Jamshedpur (Guest of Honor); Dr. V. C. Srivastava, Chief Scientist, CSIR-NML; and coordinators of the event Dr. Sourabh Chatterjee, TSL Ltd & Lalit Kumar Meena, CSIR-NML. 

A floral tribute was paid to Prof. S. N. Sinha by the dignitaries in the opening ceremony. The quiz featured a rigorous preliminary written round, followed by an engaging final stage that saw six top-performing teams compete for honors.

 

The finalists included students from:

• DAV Public School, Bistupur
• Vidya Bharti Chinmaya Vidyalaya
• AIWC Academy of Excellence
• Kerala Samajam Model School
• DBMS English School

After a series of intellectually stimulating rounds, the top honors were awarded to:
Winner: DBMS English School
1st Runner-up: AIWC Academy of Excellence
2nd Runner-up: Vidya Bharti Chinmaya Vidyalaya

These three teams will now represent the IIM Jamshedpur Chapter at the National Prof. Brahm Prakash Memorial Quiz, scheduled to be held at the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR), Kalpakkam on September 12–13, 2025. 

This national event, instituted in honor of Prof. Brahm Prakash—an iconic figure in Indian metallurgy—serves to further propagate awareness about the vital contributions of materials science to industrial innovation.

Chairperson of IIM Jamshedpur Chapter, Dr. Atanu Ranjan Pal, and other eminent metallurgists including Dr. A. N. Bhagat, Dr. S. Sivaprasad, Dr. Sanjay Kumar, Dr. G. K. Mandal, and Dr. Poulami Maji, Dr. Monalisa Mandal, graced the occasion, contributing to its academic richness and depth.

The SNSM3Q series remains a cornerstone initiative of IIM Jamshedpur Chapter, aimed at fostering scientific curiosity, career aspirations, and academic excellence in materials and metallurgy among school students.
