The Hemant Soren government in Jharkhand has approved the plan for the construction of a 2,800-bed Multi- Specialty Teaching Hospital Cum Medical College in Nagri, nearly 10 km from Ranchi, to be implemented in two phases and funded by the Asian Development Bank.
The project, spearheaded by the Jharkhand State Building Construction Corporation Limited on behalf of the Department of Health, Medical Education and Family Welfare, with a proposed outlay of Rs.4563,13,38,300 crore (
Four Thousand Sixty-Three Crore Thirteen Lakh Thirty-Eight Thousand Three Hundred crore) is cleared for approval by the Asian Development Bank ADB).
The mega project titled as Jharkhand Action for Generating Responsive and Inclusive Transformation in Health Infrastructure ( JAGRITI) aims to significantly improve public healthcare infrastructure in Jharkhand.

In 1960, Ranchi gained the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), formerly known as Rajendra Medical College and Hospital (RMCH). It was named after India's first President, Dr. Rajendra Prasad.
Over 66 years later, when RIMS was facing structural shortcomings in the face of rising demands of health care, this Multi- Specialty Teaching Hospital Cum Medical College is expected to be named as Dishum Guru Shibu Soren Institute of Medical Sciences.
Incidentally, President of India Droupadi Murmu has posthumously conferred Padma Bhushan to late Shibu Soren, father of the CM Hemant Soren.
The Government of India has applied for financing from the Asian Development Bank toward the cost of JAGRITI.
In the first phase, the project plans to construct a 1400 -bed facility at an estimated cost of ₹ 25,579,070,133 crore.
And in phase 2, the project plans to construct and develop a 1400 -bed facility at an estimated cost of ₹ 16,367,369,173 crore.
The proposed mega-hospital project, sometimes also referred to as RIMS-2, is planned on a 100-acre plot belonging to Birsa Agricultural University in Kanke, Ranchi. It sparked significant debate and political division due to the barricading of this huge plot of already acquired land for BAU established on June 26, 1981, by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
To establish BAU, a massive 3,551-acre was acquired. But this plot of nearly 100 acres remained unused and since it was not boundary walled the owners continued to cultivate the crops on their respective plots. When the Soren government began to encircle it by barbed wire, protests began last year.
Now, the protest has ended and boundary walls were being constructed for the implementation of the mega ADB-funded JAGRITI project. ( See the pictures showing the workers involved in raising the boundary walls in Nagri, Ranchi).
