The death of tribal activist Nisha Kumari Bhagat in Ranchi has raised serious questions about the protection of those who speak up on tribal rights and land-related issues. Her final social media message, her family’s demand for an independent investigation and growing public concern have brought the circumstances of her death into sharp focus.
A Final Appeal Raises Questions
Bhagat, who allegedly died by suicide at her Ranchi residence on Friday, November 6, was active on issues concerning tribal rights and land protection. Shortly before her death, she went live on Facebook, alleging harassment by the Hemant Soren-led government and land brokers. She also spoke of the risks faced by those raising their voices against powerful interests.
Her nearly 11-minute video ended abruptly, adding to questions surrounding the circumstances of her death.
Family Seeks Independent Investigation
Bhagat’s father, Handu Bhagat, has demanded a CBI inquiry, alleging the involvement of influential people. Her mortal remains were taken to her ancestral village, Uru, in Gumla district for the last rites on November 7. Members of the tribal community also decided to hold a symbolic protest before the funeral.
Political Reactions and Police Investigation
The BJP has demanded a CBI probe and called for Chief Minister Hemant Soren’s resignation. The CPI(ML) Liberation, an ally of the ruling government, has also sought a fair investigation. The incident has triggered anger across tribal communities.
Ranchi Rural SP Gaurav Goswami confirmed that an unnatural death case had been registered. No suicide note was recovered, and police said further action would follow the post-mortem report. All aspects of the case are being investigated.
Justice Must Be Established Through Truth
The circumstances of Nisha Bhagat’s death demand a transparent, impartial and time-bound investigation. Every complaint of intimidation must be taken seriously, and accountability must follow evidence. Protecting the dignity, safety and rights of tribal citizens must remain a commitment reflected in action, not merely assurances.
