The issue concerning illegal Bangladesh immigrants in Santhal Pargana, the homeland of Santhal and Paharia tribes, has gained heat following recent incidents of attack on Adivasis and Hindus in Pakur, according to reports.
A section of the Adivasi community led by ex-CM Champai Soren has launched mobilisation drive against Bangladeshi migrants.
The Adivasi Samaj has planned to organise the meeting- “ Maha Sammelan” under the banner of its “ Adivasi Self Rule” Tradition in Hiranpur village of Pakur assembly constituency on September 16.
Billed as ‘Majhi Pargana Mahasamelan’,it is expected to be attended by scores of Adivasis. Former CM Champai Soren will address Santhal and other tribal leaders of villages in Pakur.
The Mahasammelan of Adivasis has gained significance for two main reasons. One, CM Soren who represents the Barhait constituency in the assembly, near Pakur, has lots of stake in his adivasi voters.
Two, since assembly elections are due by the year end, Champai Soren’s move to mobilise Adivasis on the issue of illegal infiltration of Bangladeshis can polarise electorates.
Already, firmer Jharkhand Chief Minister Champai Soren had vowed to focus on the development of tribals after he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on August 24.
He had made it clear that his joining the BJP with the intent to develop the state and to save the very existence of tribals who are in danger due to Bangladeshi infiltration.
