The controversy surrounding remarks by Jharkhand Health Minister Irfan Ansari has escalated, with the Congress and BJP approaching the police over statements made by political leaders. The exchange has brought the issue of political rhetoric, public order and communal harmony into focus.
Congress Seeks Action Against BJP Leaders
On November 7, the Jharkhand Congress lodged a complaint at Jagannathpur police station in Ranchi, seeking an FIR against senior BJP leaders, including state president Aditya Sahu, Union Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth, former state president Deepak Prakash and Bhanu Pratap Shahi.

Congress general secretary Alok Dubey accused the leaders of making defamatory remarks against Ansari, disturbing communal harmony and inciting public sentiment. He alleged that the BJP had distorted the minister’s statement, creating confusion and mistrust.
BJP Had Filed a Complaint Against the Minister
The Congress complaint came a day after a BJP delegation led by Deepak Prakash approached Argora police station, seeking legal action against Ansari over his alleged provocative remarks.
In an earlier statement, Ansari had claimed that 40 lakh young people were waiting for Rahul Gandhi's direction to take to the streets. He also warned that the country could face an emergency-like situation if public concerns were not addressed, comparing the possible situation with developments in Bangladesh and Nepal.
Political Disagreement Moves to Police Stations
While the BJP has questioned the minister’s remarks, the Congress has defended him and accused the opposition of misrepresenting his words. Both parties have now sought police intervention.
Accountability Must Accompany Political Expression
Democratic debate requires strong opinions, but public statements by political leaders carry responsibility. Complaints must be examined impartially, allegations tested against evidence, and the law applied consistently. Political rivalry should not come at the cost of public trust, social harmony or responsible discourse.
