Jharkhand based a senior retina surgeon, Dr.Birendra Prasad Kashyap was honored with an Honorary Fellowship of All India Collegium of Ophthalmology (FAICO) by the All India Ophthalmological Society.

This honour was bestowed upon him at its 82nd annual conference at Kolkata on March 15, 2024, in recognition of his “immense” contributions in the field of retina and vitreous super speciality in ophthalmology.

The Honorary Award was handed over to him by Swami Nityakamananda Maharaj Ji, Secretary, Ramkrishna Seva Sansthan, Kolkata and Dr.Harbansh Lal, President, All India Ophthalmological Society.

This FAICO Honorary degree in the Retina super speciality is given to retina professionals after studying and validating their contributions in the field of ophthalmology, nationally and internationally. 

In the past, it was bestowed to stalwarts such as Dr PM Nagpal. A study revealed that Dr Kashyap is a valued innovator and thinker. For his pursuit of excellence, he had kick started retina practice in the erstwhile unified Bihar, almost four decades ago in 1982.

Till 2004, he had been a stand alone retina surgeon in Bihar-Jharkhand. In 2003, Dr.Kashyap created history of sorts by undertaking retina laser treatment of premature children who suffered from retinopathy of prematurity. 

In addition, in the field of retina treatment from introduction of Constellation Machine, Intravitreal Injection for retina treatment, to establishing Electro-physiology department,  the latest state of the art technology for diagnosis of retinal disorders, to launch of clinical trials for retina medicines, he is nationally recognised as having introduced all these practices for the first time in Jharkhand.

Not the least, Dr.Kashyap not only founded the Kashyap Memorial Eye Hospital in Ranchi, but also introduced  NABH certified superspeciality eye care facilityin Eastern, Western and North India, and pioneered use of Intra Vitreal Injection in 2006. 

Enquiry revealed that he had commenced clinical trials of retinal medicine at Kashyap Memorial Eye Hospital in 2021 and started fellowship in Retina Surgery & diplomat National Board of Examination in Medical Sciences Post Graduate Education in 2022.  

What is noteworthy in public life is that even when he is not in surgeon’s attire, Dr.Kashyap uses his knowledge and lends skills to a host of organisations. 

These organisation are:All India Ophthalmological Society, Eye Bank Association of India, Indian Medical Association, Vitreo retinal Society of India, Fellow of International College of Surgeons, Glaucoma Society of India, International College of Surgeons, Association of Medical Services, Indian Medical Associati, Eastern India Zonal Ophthalmological Society.
