A bandh to protest the Supreme Court's 'quota within a quota' decision about quota in state government jobs and colleges for SC and ST candidates was held in parts of Jharkhand including Ranchi.

Though in the morning, most shops and market places were open, the scene changed as the day advanced. All shops and market places were closed.

Even vendors selling fruits and vegetables disappeared from the road sides across the city where the agitators, divided in groups, came out to enforce the bandh.

At Kathal more, the agitators blocked the road causing jam on the NH 23.This paralysed four sides of the highway entering the city.

The agitators were shouting anti Supreme Court ruling on quota within quota judgement. In effect, the normal life was badly affected.

However, state and central government offices remained open through out the day.

The strike was called by two dozen Dalit and Adivasi groups - including the Reservation Bachao Sangharsh Samiti - and backed by political parties, including the ruling JMM.

In neighbouring Bihar, Rashtriya Janata Dal and the Bahujan Samaj Party in Madhya Pradesh were supporting the Bharat Bandh.

The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, various Left parties, and the Congress, which heads the INDIA opposition bloc (of which the JMM and RJD are members) are also supporting the Bharat Bandh.

In Bihar, there were clashes between protesters and the police in Patna; in a video posted on X by news agency ANI cops can be seen lathi charging and assaulting protesters on nearly-empty streets.
