Akhil Bharatiya Adivasi Mahasabha (ABAM) today urged the Jharkhand government not to implement the Land Acquisition Act in Scheduled Areas.

ABAM vice-president Mukesh Birua said the constitutional provisions, particularly under the Schedule Area and Panchayat Act,1996 protected the fundamental right of the tribal community.

He said the government was the custodian and trustee of the immovable property of the tribal community so they could not be displaced from areas which has religious, social, cultural importance for them.

Mere compensation against displacement cannot address the actual problems faced by the community on account of their lifestyle and ethos, Birua added.
