Congress MLAs on Thursday raised voices in favour of their leader Rahul Gandhi against his sentencing by a Gujarat court in a criminal defamation case filed against him over his “ Modi surname” remark three years ago.
Records show Rahul Gandhi who is famous for uttering objectionable words in public had allegedly said, “how come all the thieves have Modi as the common surname?” during a rally in Kolar, Karnataka in the run-up to the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
The court has held Rahul Gandhi guilty in his Modi surname remark case and sentenced him to two years imprisonment. And at the same time same court kept his judgment suspended for a month so that he can seek justice from an appropriate higher court.
If the verdict is held valid Rahul Gandhi can lose his membership in the Lok Sabha. Aware of the seriousness of the judgment, Congress lawmakers trooped into the well of the Jharkhand Assembly and raised slogans like *BJP ki Hitlarsahi Nahi Chalegi* (BJP*s Hitler-like rule will not work).
Alongside the BJP MLAs raised their voice against the Congress leaders and stormed into the well.
As his request to the MLAs to return to their seats went unheeded, Speaker Rabindranath Mahto adjourned the House till 12.30 pm. The House reassembled around 12.35 pm but just ten minutes later it was adjourned again till 2 pm as Congress legislators continued to create a commotion.
A court in Surat Thursday has sentenced Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to two years in jail in a 2019 criminal defamation case filed against him over his *Modi surname* remarks.
